Charity Games for Christchurch

Last night, two legends’ matches played in both Australian and New Zealand soils. The legends were the class of their own living up to the ANZAC spirit of both countries. Rugby and rugby league legends coming together to raised money for the people of Christchurch. Two of my favourite scrumhalves were playing in these games - Stacey Jones (Kiwis) and Justin Marshall (All Blacks).

The first match was the Legends of League Charity Match at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand between the New Zealand Kiwis Legends and the Australian Kangaroos Legends. The Kiwi legends won the game 32-22 in front of 6,114 crowds and raising more than NZ$100,000 for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

The second match was rugby union’s Christchurch Earthquake Relief Game between the Classic All Blacks (New Zealand) and the Classic Wallabies (Australia) at Ballymore Stadium in Brisbane, Australia. The Classic All Blacks won the game 58-20 in front of 20,000 strong crowds and raising NZ$400,000 for the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal.

Former All-Black prop Kees Meeuws summed up the event: "No other countries have what New Zealand and Australia have as a bond, a family bond in crisis. It gets lost for people sometimes, but it is reignited with nights like this."
