Snowstorm and No Work...

Covered in snow...
I thought last night's snowstorm was nothing only to wake up with a text message that there is no work today. The blizzard turns out to be the harshest in New Zealand for the last 16 years. At first, I was delighted. Extended weekend! More sleep! I was even thinking who should be my victim in the snowball fight later on today. I drifted back to sleep and woke up with a damn headache with the realization that since there is no work that also means NO PAY! :(

The Cult of Manolo and the Modification of the Words of God

[This blog entry was from my old defunct blog and I decided to re-post this entry here.]

A couple of years ago, I encountered a forum about the bogus claims by the Philippine-based Iglesia Ni Cristo (Tagalog for “Church of Christ”) and the intentional modification of the verses in the Bible. The Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC), claimed to be the largest independent religious organization in Asia, was founded in July 1914 (in some account, in 1913). Manolo’s cult are guilty of modifying the Words of God to delusionize and manipulate people in believing that their cult founder Felix Manolo was the last messenger of God and that his presence was prophesied in the Bible. The Church leaders or patriarchs (the Manolo dynasty) did not even consider but rather ignored the true meaning of the Biblical verses they modified and the historical connections of those verses.

This is not the first blog article I wrote concerning the changing of the Words of God, the first article: “The Islands of the East” talks about how Filipino habit to always believe about rumors they heard or stuffs they read about. I made the example of the story of a certain Filipino named Agapito Flores and the bogus beliefs that he invented the fluorescent lamp. Of course, the Filipino people have always been manipulated by their own countrymen. The rich elites were able to manipulate the ignorant masses to vote for them every election in exchange for money and nepotism.

The blog also talks about Manolo’s intentional modification of the Bible.

Particularly about the Book of Isaiah in the Old Testament.

When I was kid, I heard people talking about the Philippines being mention in the Holy Bible. One story I heard was that the Philippines was the same islands as that of those of Ophir with mountains of gold, which had trading relation with the Davidic Empire of Israel under King Solomon. Another story was that of course, the one about the so-called “islands of the east”.

According to Manolo and his version of the Bible, in the Book of Isaiah, chapter 24 verses 15-16, it said,
“Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. From the ends of the earth we hear singing: 'Glory to the Righteous One.'”
Sounds good isn’t it. I am sure Manolo’s followers love to read that one all over again.

However, the verses are very different from the original English translation of the Bible, the King James Version (KJV) of 1611. The Bible that is use by most independent Christian churches around the world today is the King James Version and that simply because it's the original English translation.

According to the Bible (KJV), the Book of Isaiah 24:15-16:
"Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous."
So where is the word “EAST”?

Just as I said at the beginning, I encountered a forum talking about the bogus claims by the Manolo followers. In the forum, I read more verses in the Bible intentionally modified in order to persuade or manipulate people that the Manolo cult is the right way.

One of the verses in the Bible that was and intentionally mistranslated was the Isaiah 46:11

The Book of Isaiah 46:11 (according to some version or the cult’s version) said:
“From the east I summon a bird of prey; from a far-off land, a man to fulfill my purpose. What have I said, that I will bring about; what have I planned, that I will do.”
The Iglesia Ni Cristo claims that the so-called “Bird of Prey” was the church’s founder Felix Manolo and the term “From the east… from a far-off land” meant to be the Philippine Islands since it was the only Christian country in the Far East when their cult was founded in 1914.

Indeed, the Bible did mention about a bird or a raven but it was not talking about a cult leader. The King James Version of the Book of Isaiah 46:11 said:
“Calling a ravenous bird from the east, the man that executeth my counsel from a far country: yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.”
Aside from the obvious modification of the verse, the cult also made an intentional blasphemy by claiming the “Bird of Prey” was their cult leader. A historical crime that is comparable to the mentally challenged Charles Darwin’s Evolution and delusionized Al Gore’s Climate Change/Global Warming.

The raven that was mention in the verse was meant to be Cyrus the Great, the great king of the Persian Empire (at that time, the largest empire in the known world). The Persian Empire was directly EAST of Israel and therefore, the prophet Isaiah prophesied about the Persian king being an instrument of God. Of course, Cyrus the Great was not the first king from the east (that is “EAST” of Israel) to be used as an instrument of God. The Assyrian and Babylonian kings, such as Nebuchadnezzar, were used by God to punish the unfaithful Northern Kingdom of Israel and later, the Southern Kingdom of Judah.

Another verse that was intentionally misinterpreted was the Book of John 10:11 of the New Testament. It said (in the King James Version):
“I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.”
The Manolo’s cult believes that the “shepherd” mentioned in the verse was their cult founder Felix Manolo. This was their response to the Roman Catholic Church’s claim that the “shepherd” mentioned was the Pope in Vatican. Both are wrong. Very wrong. The verse was part of the response by the Lord Jesus Christ to the Jews and the Pharisees. As you see above, the verse was in red letters because the Lord Jesus Christ himself said it. Why would Jesus Christ said, “I am the good shepherd” if he is referring to somebody else?

One thing that makes Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) a cult is that they refuse to believe the divinity of the Lord Jesus Christ. Of course, just like any cults, the INC was indeed prophesied in the Bible but not as what they want to describe their cult. In the Book of Galatians 1:6-9 (KJV) said:
“I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel:
Which is not another; but there be some that troubled you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ.
But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.
As we said before, so say I now again, if any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
The Book of Second Corinthians 11:3-4 (KJV) added:
“But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.”
The apostle Paul warns about false prophets and their false Christian doctrines, and clearly, the Manolo’s cult falls to this category.

The Words of God should not be modified and just like the first blog, I am going to end this blog with this…

Here is the Lord’s message to those who loves to change the Words of God:
In Matthew 24:35 the Lord Jesus Christ said,
“Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
God also gave a stern warning to those who change His Words.
In Revelation 22:18-19, “For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book.”
In Proverbs 30:5-6, “Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar.”

The Ultimate All-Star Weekend: The Smart (NBA) All-Stars Tour of Manila

Its official! A National Basketball Association (NBA) selection will tour the Philippines on July 23-24, 2011.

As expected, when the NBA lockout happened, NBA stars are available for basketball tours and the rumored Manila tour is now a reality. They will play against the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) All-Stars, an expected one-sided showdown between two of the oldest professional basketball leagues in the world on July 23, and the following day (July 24), the Smart-sponsored NBA stars will face the Asian Championship-bound Smart Gilas Pilipinas (Philippine national team).

There is a chance that the NBA selection will use a different name such as the one reported "US Super Selection" simply because of the NBA lockout [the players cannot use anything associated with the NBA].

Anyway, its gonna be a one-sided event but we don't get to see the likes of reigning MVP Derrick Rose, Chris Paul, Kevin Durant, Derrick Fisher, and the one who was earlier scheduled to tour Manila (Kobe Bryant) showing their skills in front of Filipino fans everyday. I love to see all those NBA wannabes in the PBA getting owned by NBA players. Perhaps a wake up call for everyone that fielding midget forwards/centers and stupid height restrictions in the PBA are ancient practices that need to be replaced.

The Islands of the East

[This blog entry was from my old defunct blog and I decided to re-post this entry here.]

Filipinos have this habit of gossips ("tsismis"). Two Filipinos may smile in front of each other and back-stabbed whoever turns around. But another habit that could be associated with gossips and back-stabbing is the habit to believe whenever they heard a rumor or whenever they read something. Such as the story of a certain Filipino named Agapito Flores inventing the fluorescent lamp.

When I was a kid, I read and heard that the Philippines was mentioned in the Bible and that it justify our country as the only Christian nation in Asia (even today, some still taught that the Philippines is the only Christian country in Asia without acknowledging East Timor). Recently, I have read in a travel blog about the same thing again.

The blog posted that in the Book of Isaiah, chapter 24 verses 15-16, the Bible said:
“Therefore in the east give glory to the Lord; exalt the name of the Lord, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea. From the ends of the earth we hear singing: 'Glory to the Righteous One.'"
Sounds good isn't it.

Nevertheless, as a Christian, I was fascinated. I thought its awesome that the Philippines, though not specifically mentioned by name, was acknowledged/prophesied in the Holy Bible.

As my faith grow and continue to mature, I have learned that the only true version of the Bible is that of the King James Version (KJV). The King James Version of the Bible was the first truly English translation of the Bible. Its translation from the original scriptures was authorized by King James I of Great Britain, the first King of the united kingdom of Scotland and England. The King James Version has served Christians for about 400 years and still is the only Authorized Version most independent Christian churches uses today.

One day, I checked my Bible. The King James Version of course. To check out the verses in the Book of Isaiah concerning the Philippines and I was surprise to see that the word "East" was not mention at all.

Here is the King James Version:
Isaiah 24: 15-16 "Wherefore glorify ye the LORD in the fires, even the name of the LORD God of Israel in the isles of the sea. From the uttermost part of the earth have we heard songs, even glory to the righteous."
It shocks me that religious translators or publishers in our country have the guts to modify the Words of God in order to make it appear that the Philippines was mention in the Bible. Clearly, the King James Version of the verses did not say the word "East" at all.

Here is the LORD's message to those who loves to change the Words of God:

In Matthew 24:35 the Lord Jesus Christ said:
"Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away."
God also gave a stern warning to those who change His Words.
In Revelation 22:18-19, "For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book."
In Proverbs 30:5-6, "Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him. Add thou not unto his words, lest he reprove thee, and thou be found a liar."

The NBA Lockout

The NBA players are on strike and it looks like we will have a possible shortened NBA season coming up for 2011-12. Its bad news for those who only follow or watch one sport (only watch basketball) and certainly, bad news for those who only watch NBA basketball.

Anyway, the lockout means the players and the team owners are not on the same page and that any NBA events from pre-season summer league to whatever promotional things they do will not happen. The good thing about it, of course, is that the players will be available for basketball tours such a Nike-sponsored tours of individual players or group of players. The rumoured series between Smart Gilas Pilipinas and an NBA Selection now becomes probable rather than possible.

Fittingly, NBA lockouts can also be seen as sort of an “end of an era” thing. When the great Michael Jordan retired in 1998, the lockout followed in July and the 1998-99 season did not start until February 1999. This year, few weeks from Shaquille O'Neal's retirement, the lockout happened.

2011 Super 15 Rugby Finals: Reds vs. Crusaders

Well, we are now in the business end of the Super Rugby competition with two teams, affected by natural disasters (Christchurch quakes and Queensland flooding) this year, meeting in the finals. The Crusaders, despite playing all their games away from home (thanks to the Christchurch earthquakes), reached the Super Rugby finals for the first time in post-Robbie Deans era and for the tenth time in the franchise's history.

The Queensland Reds defeated the Crusaders 18-13 in the finals at Suncorp Stadium concluding an incredible week for the Queenslanders winning both the Super Rugby and the State of Origin.

2011 Super 15 Rugby Finals:
  • Reds 18 vs. 13 Crusaders, July 9, 2011 [Suncorp Stadium, Brisbane, Australia] (video highlights)

When you are discouraged - Psalm 34

Psalm 34 (The Bible, King James Version)

A Psalm of Praise and Trust
A Psalm of David, when he changed his behaviour before Abimelech; who drove him away, and he departed.

[1] I will bless the LORD at all times: his praise shall continually be in my mouth.
[2] My soul shall make her boast in the LORD: the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad.
[3] O magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt his name together.
[4] I sought the LORD, and he heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.
[5] They looked unto him, and were lightened: and their faces were not ashamed.
[6] This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles.
[7] The angel of the LORD encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them.
[8] O taste and see that the LORD is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him.
[9] O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him.
[10] The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek the LORD shall not want any good thing.
[11] Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
[12] What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?
[13] Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips from speaking guile.
[14] Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.
[15] The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
[16] The face of the LORD is against them that do evil, to cut off the remembrance of them from the earth.
[17] The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth, and delivereth them out of all their troubles.
[18] The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.
[19] Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all.
[20] He keepeth all his bones: not one of them is broken.
[21] Evil shall slay the wicked: and they that hate the righteous shall be desolate.
[22] The LORD redeemeth the soul of his servants: and none of them that trust in him shall be desolate.
