Philippines in the 2011 William Jones Cup

Smart Gilas Pilipinas will represent the Philippines in the R. William Jones Cup International Basketball Tournament for the second year in a row as part of their preparation for the Olympic qualifier, 2011 FIBA Asia Championship. The team to beat on this tourney is the two-time defending champions, Iran. The Philippines has previously won the event in 1981, 1985 and 1998.

The Philippines finished third and won its third bronze medal in the competition's history. The country now has a total of six medals (three golds and three bronzes) in William Jones Cup since 1981. Paulasi Taulava played his fourth Jones Cup breaking Allan Caidic's record (3 - 1984, 1985, 1998) as the most number of William Jones Cup participation (2005, 2007, 2009, 2011) by a Filipino player. He also captured his third bronze medal in the competition making him the holder of most number of medals by Filipino player in William Jones Cup. Caidic still holds the record for the most Jones Cup title by a Filipino player.

  1. pinaglalaruan lang ng Iran ang Gilas, wala din nmang epekto ang first defeat, pasok parin sila sa championship ng jones cup.. at if ever mktsamba ang pilipinas at pumasok sa championship, dun na makikita kung ano talaga ang iran

  2. Iran is hiding their potential.. and I thought they just assembled and experimenting something... if they do meet in the play-offs, I'm sure its gonna be a different ball game.. Iran is not the defending champions for the Jones Cup and Asian Champs for nothing...

    Although, Gilas is now showing the fruits of their labors but I hope they save their best where results matters... better loss games now and win games in the Asian Champs..
